What is your life’s purpose?

Mine has changed drastically as I have aged. Fame and fortune blinded my early years.

Childhood trauma stole years from my mid 20’s until mid 50’s.

Lost and suffering clouded any purpose I had.

Healing and meditating brought clarity and a clear purpose, to be happy.

Matthew Ricard says our purpose in life is to be “Happy”.

Happiness takes surrendering to your fears, stockpiling enormous amounts of gratitude, then helping others less fortunate on this path.

Happiness comes to humble, aware souls who let the “Egos” selfishness fade with a lack of attention.

Happiness has nothing to do with achievement, adulation, success or approval.

Can you imagine being happy in stressful, awkward situations.

Accepting life’s challenges is the fork in the road we need to choose.

As long as I show up enthusiastic and give all out effort, the results do not matter.

Behaving like this gives us the best chance for success anyway.

Thanksgiving is an hourly practice, not a once a year novelty.

Gratitude grows giving, then giving returns the favor.

When my compassion center opened, gratitude and giving increased.

If you want your life to count, then be grateful and give freely.

Of all my accomplishments, giving has lasted, the trophies are tarnished and dusty, long forgotten.

Sadness and depression do not visit grateful givers as often, I know.

On this day, realize we are on this journey together.

Good deeds travel, possesssions are left behind when we depart this earth.

Thanksgiving, the ultimate gratitude experience for Americans.

 

 

This is the one day we feel obligated to feed the homeless, that would be great if hunger only happened on one day a year.

 

 

It must seem weird to the homeless, to see people get involved for a day.

 

 

I would recommend we spend an hour a day growing gratitude and giving as much as possible.

 

 

It’s winter, that old warm coat in the closet would bring some degree of comfort to a needy soul.

 

 

That act of giving will change you. You will feel something, someone in need, right now.

 

 

His/Her existence can be influenced by our kindness and acts of giving.

 

 

Great way to teach your children compassion for others.

 

 

If you ignore the needy, your kids most likely will not care either.

 

 

Be humble, give thanks for all you have.

Unintended Consequences

My healing path was anchored by hours spent each day devoted to meditating. A byproduct of this action, besides healing, was the opening of my compassion center.

This unintended consequence has brought anguish. Suffering a childhood like mine, then to be disowned by my family currently, felt lonely. I mean all you hear from people is family means everything.

I felt somewhat damaged, a little sorry for myself.

Yesterday, outside the grocery, I encountered a homeless man.

I could tell he was a loner, immediately. Somehow, I felt his isolation, his suffering, his fear.

It was cold and he had no family, no one who cares in the world, I almost cried. Now, this was real loneliness. As far as I could see, he had one tooth when I approached.

His gratitude for my small offering touched my soul.

In our society, we have so many homeless now, we look on them as subhuman.

Meditation has curbed my appetite for needing things. Giving and gratitude smother the desire for possessions, power or status.

I have dreams of having Bezos type money and power, then using it to eliminate suffering.

Without forethought, meditation has changed my life is so many unintended ways.

Carry a sandwich, an apple or a small treat to give to those in need.

This act of giving leads to an increase in gratitude and a better chance at being happy.

Taking Stock

Some have labeled me OCD, I commit all out effort when undertaking a challenge.

Example: Taking up a meditation practice to heal, I sat five hours a day for five years.

That’s what it took to heal, half measures did nothing.

It is how my mind functions, how it survived daily childhood abuse.

Surviving childhood trauma developed an incredible ability to endure hardship in the face of terror.

My thoughts were about unworthiness, avoiding and escaping.

I was consumed with myself, my suffering and possible healing.

Healing changed that focus.

Now, my compassion center has opened wide, I feel others pain and suffering.

I have day dreams of being able to alleviate suffering of our homeless and all children.

I carry this helpless feeling, not having the resources to change any of this suffering.

Look at the world, refugees suffering everywhere, poverty, corruption and war dominate.

In America our politicians are more concerned with lobbyist, power and party than the poor.

Hate dominates our politics.

Sad to see rich millionaire lawyer politicians vie for absolute power.

We are lost, most are on a journey to accumulate trophies, possessions and power.

Where does your mind gravitate to?

Giving: be inspired by others who give

Giving is contagious, spread as much as you can everyday.

A smile is a great gift, a kind word even more powerful.

Costs nothing to use kindness in large quantities.

Are you a giver or do you need more

Do you have enough in life? (Security, shelter, food, and a small community of friends).

Is your time spent trying to accumulate more possessions, more power, or more status?

Do you judge yourself externally with others, compare possessions, power and status.

How do you judge those who have far less than you?

Do these judgments bring consequences?

Much of our condition is created by our perception of life and judgments.

Altruism, giving without concern for reward, does not happen when we judge ourself as needy, lacking necessities.

Less giving means less happiness.

Greed accumulates wealth, status and power.

Too bad those qualities have nothing to do with happiness.

Happiness is a reward for giving, caring and kindness.

It is our choice how we live life.

Give, share a kindness, live a more joyful existence.

Be nice, be kind, be an example to others.

Be the one who is compassionate in your peer group.

Are your kids givers?

They follow your example.

Unintended consequences of meditation

My healing journey floundered through therapies with little impact.

Healing seemed impossible until I wandered into a new hybrid therapy that used mindfulness, ACT (Acceptance and Commitment therapy).

Being obsessed with healing, I meditated with a vengeance. Five hours a day for five years.

Healing was slow without direction or the wisdom needed to heal, so I sat more.

Healing arrived in subtle ways at first, then plotted a path to wellbeing.

Unintended consequences arrived with the planned ones.

My compassion center opened wide and I could feel others suffering intimately.

To this day seeing homeless people tears at me emotionally.

I feel their suffering immediately, it impacts my life, my thoughts, and my emotions.

It is a helpless feeling, I can not impact all this suffering.

My happiness is clouded with knowing these souls suffer in my midst.

Most people ignore or do not see these souls as people worth caring about.

Yesterday, while buying a pizza for my grandkids inside this crowded market, I asked for a extra slice.

While buying that piece of pizza, I announced that slice was for the homeless guy at the exit.

It was not to enhance my ego, but to show others it is ok to care and give.

Most were shocked, a few smiled and I could see the givers amongst me.

We need to be a country of givers, a society of compassionate souls.

The landscape I see does not resemble giving, we have become takers as a country.

Open your compassion center, giving to the less fortunate is a road that leads to a happy, fulfilled life.

We think money and power lead to happiness.

Happiness is not an isolated feeling, hard to be happy with suffering overwhelming our landscape.

Please share your feelings on others suffering.

Is our happiness separate,  isolated from those around us?

 

Can one be happy when surrounded by suffering?

 

Do we have a responsibility to give to others?

 

Is our happiness indirectly tied to giving?

 

I think we must choose our way of supporting others, then take action.

Think of how our mind is constructed. One of the most complex organs ever found, capable of tremendous achievement or extreme suffering.

 

One of the parts we invent has no origin or real existence. Yes, it is the “Ego”. Search every part of your mind and an ego can not be found.

 

Yes, we invent this “Ego” for identity, I, me, mine! Identity is its purpose. Nothing more.

 

Think of your “Ego” as a ventriloquist dummy. We give that damn puppet power and life, not command of our being.

 

That dummy runs a good part of our life unfortunately.

 

The Dummy is the one who feels resentment, judges constantly, and feels unworthy. The “Ego” is never equal to another “Ego”. He/She judges itself superior or inferior to all “Ego’s” it encounters.

 

Here in lies the rub, we never feel complete when the “Ego” is in control.

 

That means happiness is impossible.

 

One day I was having a conversation with a friend and he said something upsetting. My response to him was, my “Ego” is pissed at you.

 

Finally I had isolated my “Ego’s” needs and emotion in a real encounter. I could see “I” disagreed with my “Ego”. I had a choice for the first time.

 

Just because my “Ego” was pissed meant nothing unless I agreed.

 

Our “Ego” covets total control. This leads to suffering and loss.

 

Is your dummy controlling your life?

 

The “Ego” is dormant during meditation, also the time when our happy emotions, contained in the left prefrontal cortex light up.
