Complex PTSD: Devastating Health Effects From Workplace Bullying

The harming effects of workplace bullying can go further than mere embarrassment. A target may become psychologically injured after long-term abuse.

Some psychologists believe that a different term, Complex PTSD (C-PTSD), should be used to identify trauma that is repeated or long-term. Bullying targets may show symptoms that are similar to PTSD  and/or C-PTSD. For this reason, researchers of workplace bullying believe that bullying should be considered an example of captivity.

    This abuse is more harmful than I can ever find words to describe. It is definitely akin to a hostage situation. If you can imagine sitting at work where one or more persons begin to behave like the kids on the school bus that harassed the bus monitor.

    When the vile slurs and demeaning words fly out of their trash mouths you are in disbelief. A shock comes over you as you assess in your mind any possible way that this could be really happening. When you erect your boundaries they, just as the little sadistic kids on that bus did, persist. This is done knowing that the organization is extremely unethical and will turn a blind eye and no consequence will come.

    The name calling, humiliating and even physical threats are stated openly and only at times covertly. The person or persons that target you then enlist others of the same character to join in. Bystanders will watch and only comment on how toxic and harassing the employees are as well as the complete lack of ethics or respect by anyone in management or leadership. Bystanders cower in fear of their own job loss. You are demeaned and harassed on a constant basis often in open innuendo.

    Daily…you, a very productive, physically attractive, kind and positive person who’d always been acknowledged as such will be harassed

    By…the very unproductive and constantly counseled for lack of productivity, physically unattractive, foul mouthed, unkind and negative employees who have always been known to be such.

    The efforts that they will take to harass and demean you will make you feel as if you are in a very uncontrolled, unsafe environment…held hostage in order that you might earn the pay to meet your families obligations.

    Speak up and HR will diminish, deny, and even cover as they pin another target onto your back. Will gather with those bully employees and further intimidate you. Next up is retaliation as you further erect your boundaries.

    You will be in shock after seeing the reality of the environment and that those in management are nearly the same and not at all shocked or outraged at what you have endured for years. Next up PTSD as you cant sleep, constantly replay incidents in your mind, are nearly lethargic and then anger as you and consider act you never thought you would.

    Families and entire lives and psychological health is ruined yet here in the US there is still no law. We watched in horror as we witnessed what the bus monitor went through for ten minutes. Do we not know that adults are experiencing this for years….at work. But there are those sitting on legislation.
